The World Economic Forum estimates that “65% of children entering primary school today will ultimately end up working in completely new job types that don’t yet exist.” Roles such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) prompt engineers and mobile app developers that were nonexistent 20 years ago are now considered essential. And without app developers, you wouldn’t be reading this on your smart device right now. 

The fast-paced evolution of job roles and the increasing reliance on technology highlight the urgent need for education systems to adapt and prepare students for a future that is both unpredictable and full of opportunities. Understanding these changes is crucial for educators, policymakers, and learners alike. Just as the advent of the horse and chariot and the international network of cargo ships led to greater efficiency with greater ease, new tools and solutions are allowing us to do more with less. While technological advancements not only affect career opportunities, they also offer new ways of learning and expand access to learning, thus helping ensure that students have necessary skills for the developing workforce.

How Technology has Impacted Education Recently

The integration of technology in education has revolutionized how we learn and teach. Two major factors that have changed the education landscape today include:

• ‍The COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic accelerated the adoption of digital and remote learning, making education more accessible to millions worldwide. Platforms like Coursera, Khan Academy, and Udemy have become household names, offering a plethora of courses that cater to diverse interests and skill levels.
• Artificial intelligence and machine learning. These technologies analyze student data to provide customized learning experiences, identify areas for improvement, and suggest tailored resources. For example, AI-powered tutoring systems like Carnegie Learning offer teachers real-time feedback about students’ progress, thus enhancing the learning process. Software like MagicSchool assists teachers in creating lesson plans and assignments, allowing teachers to reduce the amount of time spent on lesson plans and freeing them up for other important work with students.

With technology continuing to advance faster than ever, it’s important to make it work for students—recognizing both its potential and its limitations—so they’re ready for the jobs of the next 20 years and beyond.

Four Strategies to Prepare Students Today for Careers of Tomorrow

1. Prioritize equal access to technology

With traditional classroom settings evolving into hybrid learning environments that combine online and in-person instruction, equal access to technology is key. While the hybrid approach (which proved especially helpful during COVID lockdowns) provides flexibility and caters to different learning styles, it also sheds light on the digital divide.  Students without internet access at home are often unable to reap the benefits of hybrid learning. Efforts to bridge the digital divide are essential to ensure that all students have equal access to educational opportunities. 

Just as the Gutenberg press transformed education in the 15th century by enabling mass production of textbooks and learning materials which were previously available only to the elite, internet access also opens up a world of new opportunities. 

India is pressing ahead in the spreading of knowledge through an initiative called Digital India, a comprehensive program that aims to transform India into a digitally-empowered society by improving digital infrastructure and increasing internet access across the country. A crucial component of this mission is the BharatNet project, which focuses on connecting rural areas with high-speed internet. 

2. Focus on real-world skills applicable across the job spectrum

Emphasize the real-world application of knowledge using innovative methods such as project-based learning, which encourages critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills to ready students for future challenges. In one study, teachers adopting this model felt it was more engaging for their students. Students also earned higher test scores than those in the control group.

3. Foster a lifelong learning mindset

By 2025, 50% of all employees may need reskilling due to advantages in technology and changing job roles. In today’s fast-paced world, continuous education is no longer optional but required for personal and professional growth, enabling individuals to adapt to changing job markets. Many firms offer ongoing training programs and partner with educational institutions to provide employees with upskilling opportunities. Fostering a continuous learning mindset among students can help encourage them to keep seeking learning opportunities in the future, making them more desirable and competitive in the workforce.

4. Embrace the future

Keep abreast of emerging trends with potential to shape the future of education, such as the ones listed below.

• Virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) are becoming powerful tools for creating immersive learning experiences. These technologies can simulate real-world scenarios, providing hands-on practice in a controlled environment and allowing for people to enjoy a variety of educational experiences. For example, many children and adults dream of experiencing life during the Roman era or seeing the Americas as they were 600 years ago. With VR, this becomes achievable.
• Social-emotional learning (SEL), which “involves the processes of developing competencies, including self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making,” is expected to grow. According to a survey by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), 93% of teachers believe that SEL is critical for students’ future success. Integrating SEL into the curriculum helps students manage emotions, build relationships, and make responsible decisions, fostering a well-rounded education.
